Dear members and friends of the Sodality of Charity,
On September 24 we had our second Fall Festival. Bishop McGuire was in Argentina to perform a priestly ordination with Father McKenna, and it was just Father Brueggemann and myself here. That’s why I was able to see just a little bit of the fest, but I was one of the judges in the pie contest. Previously I made a wish that our Sodality members would also take part in the contest, and I was happy to see they took the challenge. We had as many as 23 pies in the contest, and I and the two other judges tasted every one of them! Some Sodalists submitted two or three pies, of which I liked especially the cookie butter pie and the chocolate pudding pie. The winner was Andrea England’s Hoosier cream pie, a treat I never had before.
Thank you to all the Sodalists who contributed to our Fall Festival, whether it was by attending, selling food and crafts, receiving tickets, or dunking boys into the ice-cold water. The festival is becoming a steady gertrudian tradition in its only second year.
I said Mass for the Sodalists on September 4, the feast of St. Rose of Viterbo. October 4 is First Wednesday, so do an act of charity or receive Communion that day in honor of St. Joseph.
We will not have a monthly meeting in October. But you can still contribute in support of the parish and school by baking things for the Autumn Bake Sale. The bake sale is on Sunday, October 15, and you can bring your baked goods to Helfta Hall on Saturday, or on Sunday before the 7.30 AM Mass.
On the weekend of October 20-22 St. Gertrude has the annual Forty Hours Devotion. This is a great opportunity for all to come and spend some time with Our Lord. For the Sodalists, especially the Saturday morning votive High Mass for Peace is the good extra Mass to attend on that weekend.
On Christ the King Sunday, October 29, we have the All Saints party, where you can dress up as a Saint. It is good to start planning your costume early.
Our next big Sodality project is the annual St. Lucia procession in December. It will be our fourth one. With the procession and the Fall Festival the Sodality has contributed in a blessed way to all the gertrudian traditions of our parish.
Yours in Christ and Mary,
